Calvin & Hobbes rock easy listening covers

2010 June 5

It’s not muzak if it’s done well.  Here are a few you can feel free to play loudly for your parents.

Aztec Camera – Jump (Van Halen Cover)

Karen Souza – Creep (Radiohead Cover)

Nouvelle Vague – Melt With You (Modern English Cover)

Free Apparatjik (aka Coldplay, Mew, a-ha sideproject supergroup)

2010 June 4

Apparatjik (blockheads)

I guess when your day gig is with a band with a name like “Coldplay” you can get away with your moonlit gig being with a band named “Apparatjik“–it’s not like Guy Berryman is depending on Apparatjik becoming a household name, or even one most folks can pronounce, to put food on his table.  Although, if my daytime gig was with either Mew or a-ha, I probably wouldn’t mind a few record sales…

I’m not going to lie to you.  I listened to these tracks partially and quickly.  And at first pass, I’m not sure it was worth giving up my name and email address to download them.  But since that exchange of music for info still qualifies as FREE, it’s at least worth letting you know about it.

Click on over here to answer some obscure questions with obvious answers and download their free 3 track EP, 4 Can Keep a Secret if 3 of them are Dead.

Memo From My Sweet Most Beautiful Part of the City

2010 June 3

I’m not a Disc Jockey, but I play one on the Internet…

When The Hold Steady‘s new album dropped a couple weeks ago, I was excited to hear the first few sliding notes of the first track, Sweet Part of the City, because I just happened to have Mick Jagger‘s Ry Cooder-ladden Memo From Turner spinning on repeat around that time.

As if Sweet Part of the City wasn’t already feeling great opening with a sweet slide guitar, it goes on to end with unseasonal sleigh bells.  When done right, I LOVE unseasonal sleigh bells!

You know, I’m a holiday music freak almost as much as I’m a regular Rock n Roll music freak.  You get those sounds behaving well together on a steamy summer day, that’s pulling off something very cool indeed.

And for the trifecta of coincidental sounds, I also just happened to get reacquainted with R.E.M.‘s Brian Wilson-esque At My Most Beautiful–which begins with unseasonal sleigh bells.

So, with all that waxing about the trax complete, to hear how I would spin those three back to back to back if I were on the air,  honored with being the DJ providing you with your audio enlightenment for the next 11:40, all you have to do is
press PLAY

I so love living in the future.  Thanks for listening!  We’ll be right back after the break…

Billy Bragg’s The Only One (I can think of)

My iTunes was shuffling along this morning and reacquainted me with this great track from Billy Bragg.  I vaguely remember listening to the hell out of it at some point in my life.  So vaguely, I thought that Billy might have been covering someone else’s track I used to listen to.  But after a few more spins and a bit of googling, I guess it is his and his alone .  And I’m fully reminded of why I used to listen to the hell out of it, and am going to do so again today.
