Speeding Motorcycle changed me
I admit that bouts of introversion aren’t conducive to successful blogging. But then again, I don’t have a definition for “successful blogging,” so, what the hell.
I watched The Devil and Daniel Johnston tonight, and being the music junkie I am, had to look online for all 150 or so covers of his work the end credits said were out there, especially “one song” they said was used in a Target ad. I know, right? That’s all they give me to work with. “One Song.” They just say that as if anyone could resist staying up late needing to know which track and who covered it.
You can feel free to go to bed. Turns out, track is Speeding Motorcycle performed by Yo La Tengo. I can absolutely always use more Yo La Tengo in my life, and so can you, so here you go.

Purty, right? I’ve listened it to it about 10x while I writing this. The fact that the track is featured on YLT’s album Fakebook (released in 1990) seemed like reason enough to break out of my post-vacation vacation from posting and post it on facebook. But then again, I have this whole thing going on here at adamjoe, and here is better, so there you go.
With all the Daniel Johnston covers floating around, figured I must have heard and had a few. Here’s one from Wilco that I’ve had for years. Knew it was cover, but didn’t know it was Daniel’s.

More purty, right? I miss that kind of Wilco. I think Jay had a lot to do with that sound, the pedal steel they wove in from time to time… drag. Who knows, maybe they’ll make a biography about him one day. I think it’s safe to say Jay Bennett made some mistakes in life, but one that seemed most odd to me was releasing his collaboration with Edward Burch, The Palace at 4am, his first post-Wilco album, on the same day Wilco’s much-anticipated masterpiece Yankee Hotel Foxtrot dropped. Shame. The Palace is full of truly great songs, and I think it would have received much more attention if it was dropped a short while later, making it a story of its own, and not overshadowed by YHF’s dramatic release tale (one that includes Wilco’s ousting of Jay from the band mid-recording of that album). If you haven’t checked out The Palace at 4am, do so here. If nothing else, drop 99 cents on Talk To Me. Great stuff.
Talk to you later,
Hey Adam,
Beck also did a cover of “True Love” that I have run
across before.
Very true about “The Palace” as well. Jay Bennett had such a great ear for melody. The world is a sadder place without him.
That being said, I don’t think Wilco will ever beat this current line-up for an ass-kicking, live rock show. Wow. Sunday was pretty incredible. They’re so much more powerful live now than when they were only four guys. Not sure that I really liked the UIC Pavilion for them…something was missing, and I think it’s the intimacy you get at a place like the Riv, the Vic or even the Auditorium Theatre.
Have a great day!
Mike
P.S. Another guy I’ve been championing lately is Josh Ritter. Check him out if you haven’t!
